WHAT'S THE PLAY ABOUT?
“Once you are Real you can't become unreal again. It lasts for always.” A stuffed toy rabbit’s quest to become real through the love of a child drives this adaptation of Margery Williams’ timeless tale that celebrates the power of love to transform out lives. Join a boy and his rabbit in a world of strange and wonderful magic with talking toys, wild adventures, and secret burrows, as they come to discover the true meaning of what it is to be Real.

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
TCTC seeks male and female actors of all ethnicities, ages 18 to 60 for this production.
WHAT ROLES ARE AVAILABLE?
SKIN HORSE (Either, 30-60ish with a great voice) The narrator; he also sort of helps sort of bring things into being.
BOY (Male, 12-20ish under 5’4”)
THE VELVETEEN RABBIT (Either, 12-20ish under 5’4”) A Plush Toy Rabbit who longs to be real.
NANA (Female over 5’8”, 40-60) Nanny or Grandmother to the Boy.
WIND UP BALLERINA (Female Dancer, 12-20ish) Mechanical Toy, believes herself to be superior to a plush rabbit.
MODEL BOAT (Either, 12-20ish) Mechanical Toy, believes themselves to be superior to a plush rabbit.
MODEL AIRPLANE (Either, 12-20ish) Mechanical Toy, believes themselves to be superior to a plush rabbit.
WOODEN LION (Male, 30-50ish) Mechanical Toy, believes themselves to be superior to a plush rabbit.
TOY SOLDIER (Either, 12-20ish) Mechanical Toy, believes themselves to be superior to a plush rabbit.
WILD RABBIT (Either, a tumbler or dancer, 12ish)
FURRY RABBIT (Either, a tumbler or dancer, 12ish)
DOCTOR (Male, 30-60ish) Town Doctor; busy battling a scarlet fever outbreak in the area
SAM the GARDENER (Male, 40-60ish) A long time employee of the Boy’s family; partially deaf
NURSERY MAGIC FAIRY (Female, 20-40ish) A Fairy tasked with taking care of all of the playthings that children have loved.
WHERE WILL AUDITIONS BE HELD?
All auditions and rehearsals will be in person at the Tyler Civic Theatre.
WHAT SHOULD I PREPARE FOR THE AUDITION?
Auditions for The Velveteen Rabbit will be held by “cold reading,” so there’s nothing to prepare, but familiarity with the show/story can be helpful.
WHEN WILL REHEARSALS BE HELD?
Rehearsals will begin Monday, August 3 and run Monday-Thursday. Adjustments may be made according to the needs of the cast.
WHAT DATES WILL THE SHOW RUN?
Production dates are September 11-13 and September 17-20, 2026. There will also be two day-time performances for school groups September 15 and 16 at 9:45 AM.
